Care
A slim cory with dark horizontal streaks along the body. It spends more time swimming in midwater than most corys, especially in a group, so keep at least six together and leave open swimming space. A tank with a base of about 60 × 30 cm (around 54 litres) is enough for a group (our estimate). Use soft sand, with plants, roots and leaf litter for cover. FishBase notes that in captivity both sexes clean the undersides of leaves before spawning, so broad-leaved plants are useful. FishBase gives 22–26 °C, pH 6–8 and 2–25 dGH. Keep the water clean with regular partial changes; like all corys it is sensitive to salt and many medications. It breathes air at the surface now and then. Females are larger and broader when viewed from above. FishBase notes that males become territorial before spawning. Since the 2024 revision of Corydoras the valid name is Gastrodermus elegans (the same genus as the pygmy corys), but it is still sold as "Corydoras elegans". FishBase lists it as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2020). PlanetCatfish has a page for this species but we could not read it for this update. Diet
An omnivore that forages both on the bottom and in open water. Feed small sinking pellets, tablets and flake, with live or frozen bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp several times a week.
Breeding
FishBase records that in captivity males become territorial before spawning, females hide among plant roots, and both sexes clean leaf undersides; the eggs are stuck to leaves and plant roots. Condition a group on live and frozen food and trigger spawning with a large, cooler water change. Remove eggs or adults afterwards and raise the fry on microworm and newly hatched brine shrimp.
Compatibility and tank mates
A peaceful community fish for small to medium tanks. Good with small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and other small corys. Avoid large or boisterous fish.
