Care
Genus overview. Panaqolus are small, wood-eating plecos, mostly around 8-12 cm SL (PlanetCatfish gives 10 cm for L272), often banded or striped. Figures in this entry vary by species, so check the species or L-number before buying. Popular fish sold under this genus include L002, L074, L206, L226 and P. maccus (clown pleco, L104/L162), P. albivermis (L204), L272 (Tocantins prince pleco), L397, L403, L426 (Chava pleco) and L448. Many are hard to tell apart, so buy from sellers who label L-numbers carefully. The 100-litre minimum is our estimate for one or two fish. Tank: wood tangles are essential and rock piles optional. They produce a lot of fine wood waste, so filtration should be good. Plants will be nibbled or uprooted. Several can be kept together if each has its own hiding place; PlanetCatfish suggests roughly 30 x 30 cm of floor space per fish. Water: soft to medium, slightly acid to neutral and about 23-28 °C depending on the species. Sexing: in breeding condition males grow longer odontodes on the cheeks (interopercles) and along the rear body; males have a small pointed genital papilla, females a larger, rounded one and a wider body when ripe. Names: Panaqolus was once treated as a subgenus of Panaque and many fish are still sold as "Panaque". Some newly imported fish carry only L-numbers. Diet
Wood-eaters. Always provide several pieces, ideally different types, of bogwood to rasp on; it is a real part of the diet. Add algae wafers, vegetable-based tablets and fresh vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, potato or sweet potato. Occasional frozen food is accepted.
Breeding
Cave spawners: the male guards eggs and fry in a narrow cave. Several Panaqolus (notably P. maccus) are bred regularly in the hobby, but for many L-numbers, including L272 and L426, no spawning has been reported on PlanetCatfish. Conditioning with plenty of vegetables, warm water and water changes with slightly cooler, softer water can trigger spawning.
Compatibility and tank mates
Good community fish with peaceful tankmates such as tetras, rasboras, Corydoras and small cichlids. Somewhat territorial with their own kind and other plecos over caves, but this is manageable with enough hiding places.
