Care
Genus overview. Peckoltia are small to medium plecos, mostly around 8-15 cm SL: PlanetCatfish gives 8 cm for L009 and 15 cm for L076. They are among the best L-number plecos for a community tank. Figures in this entry vary by species, so check the species or L-number before buying. Popular fish sold under this genus include L009 (smoky peckoltia), L015 (P. vittata, candy-striped pleco), L076/L099 (orange seam pleco), L134 (P. compta), L135, L208, L209, L288 and L387. Several are often mislabelled; L009, for example, is often sold as P. arenaria. The 100-litre minimum is our estimate for a small group of the smaller species. Tank: rock piles and wood tangles with plenty of caves; plants are optional but usually safe. PlanetCatfish suggests allowing about 30 x 30 cm of floor space per fish. Good flow and oxygenation suit most species. Water: soft to medium, slightly acid to neutral, about 24-30 °C depending on species. Sexing: males carry small tooth-like odontodes on the leading pectoral-fin rays and on the rear body; females lack these and are wider across the body, especially just behind the pectoral fins. Names: some fish once sold as Peckoltia have been moved to Ancistomus or Hemiancistrus and vice versa, so names on dealer lists vary. The genus honours the Brazilian pharmacist Gustavo Peckolt. Diet
Omnivores with a liking for meaty foods; not effective algae eaters. Feed sinking pellets and tablets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and mysis, with algae wafers and vegetables such as courgette. Well-fed fish usually leave plants alone.
Breeding
Cave spawners. The male guards the eggs inside a cave and fans them until the fry are free-swimming. L076 has several breeding reports on PlanetCatfish; others, like L009, have none yet. Provide snug caves, condition with meaty food and use water changes to trigger spawning.
Compatibility and tank mates
Peaceful if a little territorial. Good with small fish, dwarf shrimp and most cichlids. Squabbles with other plecos over caves can be avoided with enough décor and floor space.
